TP’s green route

Builders’ merchant group Travis Perkins recently reported good progress against the Science Based Targets initiative (‘SBTi’) accredited carbon reduction targets it announced last year. It shows the measures that organisations can take on the route to Net Zero.

The first phase includes carbon data reporting, adopting alternative fuel technologies and electric charging points which, combined with driver fuel economy incentives, has helped reduce the emissions associated with vehicle deliveries to customers by 5 per cent over a 24-month period.

Moving to a 100 per renewable electricity tariff in November 2021 has reduced emissions by 1,000 tonnes per month across TP’s UK-based operations, and the business is installing energy saving solutions like LED lighting and solar panels.

To reduce Scope 3 emissions in its supply chain, TP says it is working closely with colleagues, customers and suppliers to assess in-use emissions from products sold and the embodied carbon they contain. This includes supplier forums to provide information on the collation of carbon data and the development of targets for their own businesses.

Transport fleet initiatives include the continued rollout of electric fork lift trucks and HVO as a replacement fuel for diesel which is now available across 30 branches and will soon support over 200 vehicles.
