GR8 opens new Saffron Walden depot

GR8 Tool Hire has opened a third depot in Saffron Walden, complementing its locations in Bishop’s Stortford and Cambridge and consolidating the company’s coverage along the M11 corridor. 

The new-build premises cover approximately 6,000 sq ft and have extensive yard space, which will be useful as the business extends further into compact plant. 

Josh Thompson, GR8’s Managing Director, says that the company has invested around £0.75 million in new equipment over the past 12 months to meet growing demand and in readiness for the Saffron Walden depot’s opening. 

“We have added more Kubota diggers, for example, dumpers from Thwaites and JCB and two additional lorries. 

“Business remains strong. Our minimum annual growth has been 15% since we opened in 2013 and there’s never been a lull. During Covid, business grew because we saw it as an opportunity, stayed open and invested. Construction activity was able to continue and a large part of our customer base comprises homeowners.” 

Josh said that GR8’s focus is on quality, customer service and charging a fair rate. “Our pricing structure is fair but firm and enables us, for example, to deliver kit same-day, early in the morning or whenever it is required. We have to give the customer what they want. 

“A lot of people forget that hirers are service providers. You can be late once or deliver the wrong kit once and you may not get a second chance,” said Josh. 

“All our staff enjoy what they do and having conversations with customers. And our drivers are our sales people: every time they approach a customer on site, it’s a potential sales point.” 

Josh says there are plans for further expansion of the GR8 operation in the future.
