We all have a part to play

The rapid and heartfelt industry response on social media following the publishing of the Q&A interview with Steve McKenzie, Group Sales Manager with The Hire Supply Company, on the topic of mental health, to coincide with World Mental Health Day on 10 October, shows how much higher on the agenda this important subject now is.

One comment stressed how vital it is to adopt a supportive and caring attitude “There is very likely to be so many guys within our industry and beyond that typically continue to tell themselves to just ‘man up’ and get on with it. I really hope that you sharing your experience will provide them with confidence to seek help like you.” 

Another added: “The more of us that speak out, the more people we can help, support and save.” 

And as one commenter noted, this is a widespread issue: “It just highlights that mental health issues can effect us all. It's OK to not be OK. It's OK to open up. If you don't feel right and someone asks you, open up: tell them how you really feel, no one will judge you.” 

It’s also important that we look out for each other. One person said: “I think it’s a lesson to us all to look at the signs outward and inward. But also to speak to people: there can be so many different triggers.” And talking about the Q&A, another commented: “I am sure this will help others know they are not alone and there is support available.” 

Just a few years ago, having a conversation about mental health in the hire industry – or, indeed, any other sector – would have been regarded as strange and irrelevant by many. Clearly that’s changed but this is an issue that needs to remain at the forefront of everyone’s agenda.
