Following on from signing up to the Pledge To Net Zero to tackle greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Nixon Hire has announced further measures as part of the company’s ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) strategy.

The business has set a target of being carbon net zero throughout its operations by 2035, led by SHEQ Director Anthony Livermore.

Nixon Hire is now an active member of the European Rental Association’s (ERA) Sustainability Committee, Safety Committee and Technical Committee, and is involved in helping to research the carbon footprint of construction equipment, developing the ERA's Equipment CO2 calculator as well as producing a Sustainable Supplier Framework to raise common practices across the industry.

The company has also signed up to become a member of the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) and to be part of its Construction Zero partnership to support and contribute to the industry zero carbon project. This includes a commitment under the categories of signposting and support, communications and engagement, performance metrics and internal ESG champions

Nixon Hire’s Renewables Division offers a wide range of eco-friendly products to allow customers to reduce their carbon footprint, including solar hybrid generators, solar mobile welfare units and battery storage units.

The company says that during 2023, it helped sites to harvest more than 264,000kWh of solar gain, save approximately 21,500 tonnes of carbon emissions and avoid the use of some 7 million litres of fuel, equating to more than £9 million in fuel savings.

Nixon Hire is adopting measures to maximise energy savings and reduce carbon emissions throughout it own depot network. As previously reported on the blog, solar panels have been fitted to the roof of the workshop at its flagship Wolverhampton depot (pictured above), where electric vehicle charging points have also been installed.

The company says that further developments will take place in the months and years ahead.
