Honda adds battery chainsaw

Notwithstanding the fact that chainsaws are something of a niche hire product, Honda’s launch of a cordless model shows the performance that modern batteries can deliver.

Designed for domestic use, the HHC36BXB model has been added to the manufacturer’s 36V cordless system and has a 1.6kW brushless motor. It is suited to tasks such as firewood preparation and small tree felling.

Honda says the chainsaw can perform more than 60 cuts of 100mm2 pine wood on one charge of the 2.0Ah battery. An automatic speed control system is designed to dynamically adapt to the wood's hardness, delivering high torque for hard wood and high rpm for soft wood.

An electronic control system detects potential stalls and adjusts power to provide continuous operation and to avoid overheating. A kickback brake is also incorporated, and the tool is fitted with a low-profile Oregon-90PX chain and 35cm Oregon bar designed for low vibration.

The HHC36BXB can also be powered by 4.0Ah and 6.0Ah batteries for medium to heavy domestic use.
