Ford to launch Transit hybrid

Ford is introducing a plug-in hybrid power model to its Transit van line-up.

The Transit Connect PHEV incorporates a completely new power train line-up that couples a 1.5-litre petrol engine to a high-voltage battery and electric motor to deliver a combined 150PS and 350Nm of torque through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Maximum stated payload capacity is 770kg and maximum trailer weight is 1400kg.

The vehicle has a targeted electric range of up to 68 miles and Ford says that, in EV mode, it can still deliver up to 330Nm of torque for urban load-hauling.

Drivers can top up the battery with a 50kW DC fast charger, or recharge fully using the onboard 11kW AC charger between shifts.

There is a choice of three drive modes. The EV Now setting uses only the electric motor, while EV Auto, which balances the electric and petrol power sources to suit driving conditions. EV Later is for longer highway journeys.

For charging equipment such as laptops or tools, USB-C ports are fitted in in the cab offering up to 45W of power.

Options include Pro Trailer Backup Assist to help drivers manoeuvre a trailer without jack-knifing. Ford says the system uses sensors and a rear-view camera to help the driver intuitively guide the trailer with a control knob and digital display, rather than the steering wheel.

The Transit Connect enters production in spring 2024, when initial orders will be taken.
