Resolving to go green

The adoption of sustainable equipment will continue to expand in 2024 as users seek alternatives to machines using fossil fuels, according to hire industry participants in a recent webinar organised by Point of Rental Software.

Entitled Redefining Success, the event asked a number of hire professionals about their aims and predictions for the year ahead.

Participants included Rob Pullen, Operations Director at MHM Group; Trey Calloway, Director of Technical Operations with SitePro Rentals based in Texas; and Brad Kniep, Director of Operations at American Rental based in Illinois.

All agreed that more customers are showing interest in environmentally friendly equipment but recognised there is a learning curve for both hire personnel and end users in specifying the technology and using it in an optimum manner.

Rob Pullen said that MHM is digitalising its operations where possible to reduce time and paperwork throughout the organisation. It has adopted the workshop management and driver modules for Point of Rental’s Syrinx software.

Rob and Brad Kniep also reported having successfully implemented Microsoft’s Power BI (business intelligence) software to create real-time reports on aspects like utilisation and carbon emissions. Rob said that MHM’s dashboard system gives live data on equipment in use throughout the country and updates itself every morning, saving many man-hours.

Trey Calloway said that hire companies needed to promote the benefits of sustainable equipment and the advantages it offered, such as being able to use electric and battery powered plant in indoor environments.

Rob Pullen said that MHM is developing an online calculator to enable users to assess the environmental and economic characteristics of different equipment types, including electric, solar and HVO powered machines, as well as diesel ones.
