Tsurumi’s green trees

Continuing its drive towards becoming a Net Zero company, Tsurumi Pumps UK has pledged to plant a tree in approved sustainable forestry programmes for every Tsurumi pump it supplies throughout 2024.

Trees will be planted in the UK and overseas, and the company has set itself the target of at least 10,000. It will give regular updates on progress via its website.

The UK tree planting will be carried out by Carma, a B Corp certified company that verifies organisations for meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

“We are encouraging all our customers to join us on the journey, too, and we can register trees in their name if they wish following their purchase,” said Pete McMutrie, Sales Director with Tsurumi Pumps UK.

Trees are a major weapon in combating climate change, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and releasing clean, breathable oxygen back into the air. Trees also help prevent flooding, reduce local temperatures and provide habitats for wildlife.

Carma's tree-planting in the UK (pictured above)  is undertaken by armed forces veterans via the Green Task Force, a charity established to solve environmental issues and helping veterans back into employment. 6% of serving and former serving personnel, and 17% of those who have been in a combat situation suffer from some form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It has been proven that getting veterans involved in nature based therapy (NBT) has a positive effect on their mental health.

“Sustainability is one of our key objectives,” said Pete. “As a company, we became Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon neutral by 2023 and our head office in Maidstone is powered by solar panels.

“As a global brand, Tsurumi manufactures products sustainably including using renewable energy and the company is currently building a new motor factory in Japan that will be powered by solar panels. Every year in the UK we aim to reduce our printing and use of paper, so we wanted to re-use this budget to fund the tree planting project which will help to boost the tree population.”

Jim Holland, CEO and Co-Founder of Carma said: “We are delighted to work with Tsurumi Pumps UK on the company’s tree planting project throughout 2024. This great initiative will not only have a positive impact on the planet, but also support veterans in the UK and communities overseas.”
