Batteries cure headaches

The ways in which battery energy storage systems can solve eight temporary power headaches for site managers were discussed in a recent webinar organised by Powr2 which manufactures such units.

By charging the battery with a backup generator which then shuts off to leave it as the prime power source, optimal running can be achieved, said Frank Moyer, Power2’s Global Director of Sales.

This lessens the likelihood of the generator being oversized to cope with peaks in demand. Noise is also reduced as the battery is silent in operation. Generator maintenance and associated costs are also lower due to the decrease in engine running time, as well as fuel cost savings.

Factors like these addressed another headache for customers who need to meet sustainability goals, as a hybrid setup typically gives an 80 per cent reduction in emissions compared against running a diesel generator alone, said Frank Moyer.

The need for fewer fuel deliveries helped remote sites to run more efficiently and the battery could be used as the sole source of power when the backup generator was being serviced, reducing downtime.

Up to four of Powr2’s Powrbank battery units can be run in parallel to give higher power capacities by using the manufacturer’s Powrsync system (as shown above), and the fact that the battery gives zero emissions at the point of use makes them a suitable solution for work in interior or underground locations.
