Tsurumi extends carbon neutrality

Tsurumi Pumps UK has obtained its PAS 2060 Qualifying Explanatory Statement (QES) after achieving operational carbon neutral status.

In addition to becoming scope 1 and 2 carbon neutral last year, the company has now received this recognition carbon including various scope 3 measurements, such as waste produced and staff commuting.

Scope 1 emissions are created directly by an organisation’s activities, such as using fuel in vehicle fleets or, say, operating a furnace; scope 2 relates to the electricity it purchases from the grid; and scope 3 effectively covers everything else, including emissions throughout the entire supply chain, from products and the materials used in their manufacture, to packaging and transportation.

PAS 2060 is a standard from the British Standards Institution that defines a common method of achieving carbon neutrality. It requires the creation of a carbon management plan, a carbon credits programme and a verification of the achievement of neutrality. Tsurumi Pumps UK has now obtained this certification

Working with carbon specialists has enabled Tsurumi to formulate a long-term carbon reduction strategy whilst offsetting its immediate short-term footprint by supporting and investing in a renewable energy wind farm project and a UK-based climate-positive tree planting initiative. The company says it is delighted to support these whilst working towards its future environmental goals.

The group’s Kyoto manufacturing plant in Japan is also about to embark on an ambitious project to build a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility powered by solar panels (pictured above). Two of its existing sites are already operating solely from renewable energy.

This follows on from work undertaken at Tsurumi Pumps UK’s head office and warehouse building in Maidstone, which has had solar panels installed since 2012.

As well as sustainable operations and manufacturing, the company says its brand’s ethos has been built on supplying longer-lasting robust products, offering an effective method for reducing carbon footprints. This results in decreased stock replenishment which increases the return on investment, and lowers the total cost of ownership for hire fleet owners.

Tsurumi’s LB-480, LSC1.4S and HS2.4S single-phase contractors’ pumps are popular in the hire and construction industry due to their extended product lifespan and performance in harsh conditions. The Product Lifecycle Assessment data obtained on these core pump models has enabled Tsurumi to demonstrate the carbon-saving benefits and the reduced whole-life costs from having a longer in-use shelf life.
