Speedy aims for a double

Speedy Hire has been shortlisted in two categories for the inaugural Net-Zero Awards organised by the edie media brand which recognise individuals and businesses spearheading the transition towards a net-zero carbon economy.

Shortlisted in the Built Environment Project of the Year category, Speedy’s Innovation Centre in Milton Keynes (pictured above) has been recognised for its substantial emission reductions. During the hirer’s 2023 financial year, the facility became carbon negative and achieved a rare A+ EPC rating.

The small amount of energy the centre was using is now being supplied by photovoltaic cells, with the remaining power being exported back to the grid. The 40,000 sq ft facility is powered by a 286kW solar PV system, and includes biodiversity features, as the blog reported when it was opened in 2021

Also shortlisted for the Mobility Project of the Year category, Speedy has been acknowledged for its shift towards more sustainable transport (pictured below) and logistics. The company is adding more zero or low-emission vehicles to its fleet and is trialling initiatives such as moving freight through London along the Thames by electric boat to reduce congestion and emissions.

Amelia Woodley, Speedy’s ESG Director, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for the inaugural edie Net-Zero awards. As the first company in the hire sector to publicly sign up to science-based net-zero targets, we have ambitious goals to reach net-zero by 2040. Being recognised for our hard-work up to this point is a privilege.

“Our ESG strategy, Decade to Deliver, has captured our goals to drive a ‘hire revolution’ through promoting the circular model of hire to the masses, whilst making hire even more sustainable through collaboration with partners and investing in innovation to decarbonise the industries we support.”

The awards ceremony will take place in London on 15 November.
