BP opens EV hub at NEC

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers attending an event at the NEC might benefit from a new charging hub at the complex which can accommodate up to 180 users simultaneously.

With 30 ‘ultra-fast’ 150kW and 150 7kW charge points, the Gigahub facility is claimed to be the UK’s largest EV charging hub. The ultra-fast units can provide sufficient power for typically 100 miles of range in 15 minutes.

The project was developed jointly by bp pulse, the energy company’s EV charging business, the NEC and the EV Network infrastructure company.

The Gigahub was officially opened by the chancellor of the exchequer Jeremy Hunt who stated: “This is the biggest private investment in electric charging in the UK and is a huge vote of confidence in Britain’s role as a leader in green industries.

“The ground-breaking site will be a major transport hub for the future and marks a significant step in our rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the country,” he added.

bp pulse has opened seven charging hubs this year, including the second biggest at Kettering. The company plans to invest up to £18 billion in the UK energy system by 2030 including up to £1 billion for EV charging infrastructure. It plans to roll out hundreds of hubs by 2030 in urban areas, on trunk roads and motorways and at destinations such as restaurants, retail parks and hotels.
