TP’s green progress

In its half-year results announced last month, Travis Perkins reported the progress that the builders’ merchant group has made regarding sustainability in its operations.

The business says it has made good progress against its accredited Science Based Targets initiative aligned to a 1.5C carbon reduction.

TP has expanded the use of HVO (hydro-treated vegetable oil) as a low carbon fuel in its vehicle fleet, as pictured above. Following trials last year that resulted in higher carbon savings than anticipated (92 per cent against a target of 90 per cent,) this has been broadened to 40 group sites supplying more than 240 vehicles, saving more than 1.3 million litres of diesel annually.

TP businesses include the Travis Perkins merchant, civils specialist Keyline, pipeline and heating equipment supplier BSS and insulation materials provider CCF.

In July the group started to take delivery of new electric forklift trucks as part of its Project Switch programme which will see up to 1,100 diesel powered machines replaced with electric alternatives by mid-2024, saving 6,600 tonnes of carbon a year.

Electric vehicle chargers have been installed for employees and visitors, and LED lighting is being rolled out across the branch network. TP has also identified locations to test low-carbon technologies such as air source heat pumps and solar panels.

In addition, CCF, has launched a carbon reporting trial service providing information on emissions relating to the delivery of products to site. The intention is to eventually incorporate details of embodied carbon in materials.
