How to be green

Many organisations are aware of the need to adopt sound environmental practices on the route to net zero – perhaps hirers even more so, given their role in the circular economy. However, many companies find it difficult to source relevant advice and information.

So it is significant that the government has now launched a new service designed to provide such guidance, helping businesses to reduce their carbon emissions and save money.

The services available from the UK Business Climate Hub include a free carbon calculator and a tools to help businesses measure, track and report on their emissions. It also offers advice on sourcing products from green suppliers, reducing emissions from freight and logistics, and cost-effective ways of installing solar panels and electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

The new support is aimed particularly at 5.5 million small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) in the UK. The government says research shows that 90 pre cent of such organisations are keen to tackle climate change but find it difficult to know how or where to find solutions to reduce their carbon footprint.

Studies also show that 85 per cent of consumers are more likely to buy from a business with a reputation for sustainability.

Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Graham Stuart, said: “More and more businesses are recognising the business benefits of reaching net zero and we’re determined to empower them to do so.

“The new UK Business Climate Hub is a one-stop-shop for businesses to find practical advice to reduce their carbon footprint and save on their energy bills. Whether it’s fitting a low-carbon heat pump, generating energy with solar panels, or reducing the emissions from shipping goods, the new support will ensure businesses can drive towards net zero.”

Advice is also available on how to pay less for company EVs; obtaining business grants and financing for a retrofit; air source heat pumps; generating green energy with a wind turbine and selling it back to the grid; buying credible carbon offsets; and getting low-carbon product labels and certifications.

The new hub site has been endorsed by business leaders and ministers on the new Net Zero Council which comprises CEOs from companies including Co-op, HSBC, Siemens and Cemex who are working with others in their sectors to create action plans to decarbonise.

A quick look shows that the site provides much information and food for thought about meeting sustainability obligations and it is well worth exploring.
