Knowledge gap

A supplier whose products include battery systems for use with generators recently quoted the surprising statistic that around 80 per cent of the call-out requests its technicians receive turn out to be site-related rather than due to any fault with the equipment itself. 

Ironically, it’s a growing issue as interest and adoption of such products are growing on the route towards net zero. 

As has been discussed before on the blog, some operators do not appreciate the correct ways of using battery systems, such as setting timers correctly to optimise usage and ensure adequate charge is maintained. 

“Solar panels in an installation may be inadequate leading to excessive generator operation,” the suppliers said. “Incorrect loading calculations can lead to not all phases in a 3-phase setup delivering power, or systems can become unstable. 

“It’s not the fault of the equipment, it’s how it has been specified, set up or operated. And out technical team are increasingly being called on to support customers in the field which take time, resources and manpower.” 

Something the blog has also mentioned before is that suppliers and hirers of new eco-friendly equipment increasingly need to become consultants, assessing a site’s location and capabilities to determine the optimum green solution. 

That may well require investment in training and personnel, besides the products themselves. But at a time when it is difficult to recruit good people owing to various socio-economic factors, it could well prove challenging.

However, on a more positive note, such a consultancy service is surely something that clients could be charged for.
