Speedy goes green in Leeds

Speedy has opened its second sustainable service centre in Leeds, following on from the launch of its A+ Energy rated Milton Keynes Innovation Centre in 2021.

This new low carbon centre model will become a blueprint for all future new and refurbished service centres as part of the company’s programme towards net zero.

The Leeds facility incorporates a smart heating system for offices and warehouses which automatically controls shutters and doors to minimise energy usage, as well as indoor air quality monitoring which controls temperature, humidity, CO2 and particulate matter.

The warehouse lighting adapts automatically to natural light levels and smart work bays are designed to minimise energy usage when not in use. Lighting and heating can also be controlled remotely and the centre has three double-port electric vehicle charging points on site.

A well-being area is incorporated to enhance the working environment, and the Leeds centre will also engage in community initiatives, such as inviting local primary schools to create a mural at the building facility and allowing children to plant trees and get involved with the facility’s well-being garden.

The Leeds centre will include a display to showcase electric, battery and solar powered products as ell as technologies enabling customers to reduce their environmental impact.

The site joins other new and larger Regional Service Centres that Speedy has opened in the past 24 months including facilities at Milton Keynes, Reading, Swindon, Doncaster, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Leicester, providing a comprehensive range of hire tools, equipment, plant and powered access under one roof.

Danny Johnson, Speedy’s Managing Director for UK & Ireland, said: “We are focused on using the latest technologies to decarbonise our whole service centre network to improve the environment for the planet, as well as for our colleagues who work in operational roles, following the success of well-being spaces in some of our other new service centres.

“As the first company in our sector to sign up to the globally recognised Science Based Targets (SBTis) in the drive towards net-zero, our low carbon property plan will play a key role in delivering on the targets we’ve set ourselves in becoming a net zero business by 2040, ten years ahead of the Government’s target of 2050,” he added.

Area Manager Rob Hibbert, commented: “Speedy have been operating in Leeds for many years. We’ve supported hundreds of the major construction and infrastructure projects in and around the city, and with our new and improved service centre we’re perfectly positioned to continue to support the growth in the city in the coming years.”

Specialist services for Hoisting, Access, Lifting, Survey & Plant will be available from the Leeds centre, with a dedicated training suite providing courses including safe working at height, through real-world and virtual technology.
