Don’t let the grass grow

Demand for artificial turf to replace garden lawns is apparently booming. The number of people searching for information about it on the internet has risen sharply since the first lockdown.

Furloughed workers who are spending more time at home, and families postponing summer holidays because of overseas travel uncertainty, are installing it to create low-maintenance outdoor living spaces.

And they, or the landscapers doing the job for them, are hiring equipment to get the job done. That’s certainly the experience of Stan Moore, managing director of Moore Equipment Hire in Grangemouth.

The company has continued to invest steadily in grounds care equipment that can be used for synthetic turf installation and other tasks, such as a recent order for JCB compact tracked dumpers (pictured).

“We were inundated with requests last summer for this kind of kit and the trend looks set to continue,” Stan tells me. “Lots of people are installing artificial grass – some local merchants are even running out of it.

“We’ve also been buying more turf cutters, rotavators, brushcutters and compaction plates from suppliers like HSC (Hire Supply Co) to meet general demand. Having the equipment available when people need it is essential. The last thing you want is to have to say no to a customer.”

Stan says that Moore Equipment, which celebrates its fifth anniversary in July, has received great positive feedback as a result from people who are eager to get on with jobs like installing artificial turf. You might say they don’t want to let the grass grow under their feet...
