Green lights for Speedy

As part of an ambitious programme to introduce more eco-friendly products, Speedy has added new battery powered portable lighting towers to its fleet to help contractors reduce on-site emissions and fuel costs.

The hirer has bought 300 MX Fuel Tower lights, made by Milwaukee, following successful trials with national customers including Balfour Beatty.

The lights can be used indoors and outdoors and provide a brightness of up to 27,000 lumens. They offer a maximum height of 3.1m and can be controlled by an app to adjust brightness and to monitor battery charge levels.

Following tests, Speedy says that construction businesses will typically save £37,000 annually on fuel and repair costs, and up to 62 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent - a standard unit for measuring total carbon footprints) for every 20 standard diesel models they replace with battery powered units.

Andy Connor, supply chain director at Speedy, says the company’s adoption of such technology shows the important role that hirers play in helping contractors meet their zero-emission obligations.

“As a key intermediary in the sector, we recognise the significant role we play in creating a greener supply chain, and this investment forms part of our ambitious sustainability strategy to ensure ‘eco’ products account for 70% of our itemised equipment fleet by 2026,” he says.

Speedy plans further investment in Milwaukee’s wider MX Fuel range of battery powered equipment, including cut-off saws, demolition hammers and diamond core drills.

Dale McElveen, Milwaukee UK and Ireland general manager adds: “Contractors require equipment that supports them in meeting client carbon emission targets as the industry moves towards net zero, while ensuring they deliver their projects safely, on budget and on time.”
