Batteries generate more benefits

Battery systems for storing electricity to run generators and other site equipment are obviously growing in popularity because of their environmentally friendly qualities. Burning less fuel decreases emissions and helps contractors meet Net Zero obligations.

However, these products can deliver other benefits to users and hirers – not least of which are the cost reductions, given the sharp increase in fuel prices over the past 12 months.

Indeed, when I visited their production facility in Telford recently, the solar hybrid equipment manufacturer Lifos told me that their Fort PV solar battery hybrid (above) could typically reduce generator running time by between 45 per cent and 80 per cent depending on the season.

Furthermore, as the generator to which the battery is connected runs less frequently, wear and tear on the engine and other components is decreased, and fewer site visits are required, which again lowers emissions throughout the supply chain.

Also, while the use of equipment with Stage V engines is mandatory in cities with low emission zones (LEZ) and some other locations, many hirers understandably have equipment with Stage IIIa power units which are comparatively young and still have to deliver the return on investment expected.

So linking such machines to a battery system can be a greener option that benefits both the user and the hirer.
