Hyundai Doosan to make hydrogen engines

Hyundai Doosan Infracore (HDI) has produced a prototype hydrogen internal combustion engine which it plans to promote at next month’s Conexpo exhibition in Las Vegas.

The organisation expects to achieve validation for the engine to be used on trucks, buses, construction machinery and mid-to-large-sized power generators in 2024, with full-scale mass production starting in 2025.

The hydrogen engine under development is an 11-litre class unit with a power output of 300kW (402hp) and a torque of 1700 Nm at 2,000rpm. It satisfies Tier 5, Stage 5 and Euro 7 regulations which require the emission to be 90 per cent reduced to the current level to meet Zero CO2 (below 1g/kwh) and Zero Impact Emission (Zero Emission in EU).

HDI states that as hydrogen engines are powered by low-purity hydrogen they are suitable for mid-to-large-sized vehicles and for long-distance applications. A single ten-minute charge is said to enable a distance of up to 310 miles, and the company says the engines can prove to be up to 30 per cent more economical than fuel cells or battery packs when vehicle price and maintenance costs are considered.

Hyundai Heavy Industries purchased Doosan Infracore last August.
