Electric plant sales increase, but slowly
16 February 2023
Statistics released last week show that sales of electric powered construction machines last year were double the 2021 level. However, annual sales of electric powered equipment are still in the hundreds, highlighting the need for more investment in charging infrastructure.
This is one of the findings in data from the construction equipment statistics exchange run by Systematics International Ltd in partnership with the Construction Equipment Association (CEA).
Generally, retail sales of construction and earthmoving equipment continued to show very strong growth at the end of 2022. Sales in Q4 were 20 per cent above the same quarter in 2021, and as a result, sales for the full year were 2.9 per cent above 2021 levels, reaching a record 37,400 units. By exceeding 2021 levels, which were higher than the peaks reached in 2018 and 2019, sales in 2022 were the highest since before the financial crisis in 2008.
Strong sales of equipment in the last quarter of the year indicate that some of the supply chain issues experienced within the sector earlier in the year have begun to ease.
Telehandlers for the construction industry showed the highest sales last year. Mini and midi excavators picked up significantly in Q4, with sales reaching similar levels to 2021.
