Barnet launches eco campaign

Barnet Council has today launched a sustainability campaign to become a net zero London borough by 2042.

Called BarNET ZERO, the initial five-week campaign will include a number of initiatives to show individuals the steps they can take to make improvements.

In May 2022, the council declared a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency and set the target of becoming a Net Zero council by 2030 and Net Zero borough no later than 2042.

The Council says that people can get involved in local volunteering opportunities in the community and support local businesses adopting more eco-friendly practices, as well as insulating homes, installing solar panels and other energy saving technology like ground source heat pumps.

Barnet has already installed 510 more electric vehicle charging points across the borough and joined the Mayor of London’s anti-idling campaign to improve air quality.

The £8bn Brent Cross Town development has committed to being a net-zero carbon town by 2030, including an on-site energy centre and what is claimed to be the largest air source heat pump installation in Europe. The planned 6,700 new homes will have low carbon heating and all energy supplied will come from 100 per cent renewal sources.
