United Rentals starts Shell EV study
30 November 2022
American giant United Rentals has provided all-electric trucks to the energy company Shell for use at a chemical manufacturing site in Louisiana as part of an electric vehicle (EV) mobility pilot programme.
The initiative will test and evaluate EV use at the facility to support future development of low-carbon strategies for vehicles both hired and owned by Shell.
The equipment package includes the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck which has a claimed range of up to 320 miles and a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds, in addition to a 9.6kW onboard generator system.
The programme will utilise a previously installed charging station inside the town of Geismar, part of Baton Rouge facility. Criteria to be studied include the EV charging station infrastructure location, re-charging time periods, range, maintenance requirements and benefit-to-cost ratio.
The aim is to apply the findings to other similar parts of Shell’s operations. The partnership will also help United Rentals identify other industrial plant projects where emissions-saving measures can be deployed to work towards net-zero work sites.
