BP pilots lower carbon fuels
23 November 2022
German fuel retailer Aral, a brand of BP, is piloting two new fuels containing renewable components. Called Aral Futura Super 95 and Aral Futura Diesel, both are said to reduce CO2 emissions compared against pure fossil fuels by at least 25 per cent and contain at least 30 per cent of renewable biofuel elements.
They are publicly available for customers at one Aral station in Berlin and one in Düsseldorf.
Patrick Wendeler, CEO of Aral AG, said: "We believe that petrol and diesel fuels that save CO2 emissions can play an important role in the energy transition of transport – even as it continues to broader vehicle electrification and the diversification of drives such as bio-LNG, bio-CNG and hydrogen in heavy-duty transport. With our new fuels, we demonstrate what is already possible within the existing fuels standards today.”
According to Statistisches Bundesamt, the federal statistical office of Germany, the transport sector is currently estimated to account for more than 25 per cent of all CO2 emissions in the European Union.
Blending biofuels into petrol and diesel is one option that distributors are exploring to further the use of internal combustion engines with reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Aral says that the Futura fuels can be used in existing conventional or hybrid vehicles without modifications, provided they can run on E10 or B7 fuel.
The fuels are also claimed to protect against engine contamination.
