United Rentals to add hydrogen generators

United Rentals is adding several hydrogen power generators to its North American hire fleet in the coming months. They will be offered to customers as a zero-emissions power solution to charge electric vehicles, tools and other equipment.

The EODev GEH2 fuel cell electro-hydrogen generators have been acquired from Generac, a distribution partner for EODev. With a compact footprint, the units deliver instant power up to 110kVA (88 kW).

United Rentals expects to deploy the hydrogen generators during the fourth quarter of 2022 and in 2023.

David Scott, senior vice president of specialty operations with the US rental giant, said: “We can assist companies as they work to close the sustainability loop by providing the power they need without generating harmful emissions to charge electric vehicles and equipment, and more.”

Included among the applications for the GEH2 units are construction sites, confined environments such as tunnels, mines and enclosed spaces, entertainment venues, concerts and sports events.

As previously reported on the Site-Eco blog, United Rentals has set a goal of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions intensity of its business by 35 per cent by 2030, from 2018 levels.
