Punch and Tecnogen boost hydrogen efficiency

The Punch Group and Tecnogen, which is part of Bruno Generators Group (BGG), have premiered at Bauma a hydrogen powered generator with the Flybrid flywheel system derived from technology used in Formula One.

Developed by the Punch Hydrocells business which specialises in products to transition towards net-zero, the hydrogen engine is claimed to achieve a maximum power of 250kW at 3,000rpm in marine, mobile off-highway and on-highway applications, with a specific power of 38kW per litre achieved with port fuel injection combined with a combustion system designed for high efficiency.

In the generator application, it achieves 100kW prime rated power at 1,500 rpm and 110kW at 1,800rpm.

The developers say that the system can operate in heavy-duty conditions in harsh environments has tolerance to low purity hydrogen.

Punch Flybrid products can be used for dynamic applications like tower cranes, chillers, hoists, mast climbers and pumps to react to peak loadings, enabling site generator sets to be downsized.

The flywheel system boosts the peak performance and significantly improves the load response of the generator. As a result, fuel and emission savings of over 50 per cent can be achieved in dynamic applications. Punch says that combining the flywheel with hydrogen technology, the emissions are reduced close to zero.

The Tecnogen generator utilises Bruno’s patented VSi (variable speed inverter) technology which is also used in the Fusteq series of generators. This is designed to give significant reductions in fuel consumption as well as a low noise levels.

The generator is equipped with a DSE8610MKII control unit for synchronising and load sharing and can be synchronized with up to 32 other generators. It delivers a power of 105kVA prime rated power at 50Hz and 120kVA at 60Hz.
