Awards double for Flybrid

The eco-friendly Punch Flybrid system recently won in two categories of the British Construction Industry Awards held in London.

Construction group Bowmer & Kirkland submitted the winning entries in the Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year category as well as the overall Initiative of the Year Award, selected from all other winners.

Most of the Flybrid units used by Bowmer + Kirkland have been provided by John F Hunt Power. The contractor currently has ten Flybrids on its sites and plans to roll them out in all instances where tower cranes are being deployed.

Developed for Formula 1, the innovative product uses flywheel technology is used in tandem with generators to level out the peak power loadings that the set has to deal with. The system delivers energy immediately at high power during an increasing load step and captures excess energy during a decreasing load step.

This delivers significant fuel savings and reduces emissions, as well as making the generators run more efficiently.

Generators on construction projects are typically sized for peak loads. However, most of the time they run at low load factors, which results in poor fuel economy and high emissions.
