Chargers that are Green

It’s ironic. People are urged to drive electric vehicles but in order to charge them it is perhaps almost inevitable that the source providing the electricity is derived from fossil fuels somewhere in the supply chain, delivered by a gas power station or a diesel generator.

However, according to Green Power Hire, if many vehicles can be charged intelligently from the same source, the environmental impact can be lower than that arising from recharging a single diesel or petrol engined vehicle.

“A large contractor that is adopting sustainable ways of working might have a lot of electric vehicles at a site but there will be nowhere to charge them, especially during the early stages of a project,” says director Mark Chamberlain.

“We can set up a charging hub almost anywhere at a site, or for an event, or for a local authority that is trialling vehicles like electric bin lorries.”

Green Power Hire can combine a 45kVA battery storage system with a 40kVA diesel generator and recharging points, from the supplier IDE Systems, to allow three vehicles to charge simultaneously at a rate of 7kW each. Some plug-in hybrid cars typically charge at 3.5kW, meaning six could be connected at once. Other permutations are also available with larger battery systems.

“Having one engine running at its optimum efficiency and fuelled by an alternative fuel such as HVO to charge multiple electric vehicles delivers a much greener solution,” says Mark.
