Speedy buys electric Transits

Speedy has invested £8.25m in 150 new electric Ford Transit vans which will cut up to 1,280 tonnes of CO2e per year from its commercial fleet emissions, said to be equivalent to that absorbed by 7,700 trees in a year.

The investment forms part of the firm’s target for more than half of its 1,100 strong commercial fleet to be electric or hybrid by 2025, and to be fully low-carbon by 2030.

Speedy has ordered one hundred 4.25-tonne single chassis cab E-Transit models and 50 3.5-tonne vans to replace internal combustion engine vehicles.

Chris Dempsey, managing director – operational support at Speedy, said: “Our strategy supports our customer’s sustainability objectives as they strive to deliver projects with minimal environmental impact, of which site deliveries play a vital role. This significant investment in new electric vehicles demonstrates our commitment in helping our customers achieve these aims.”

An E-Transit trial vehicle will be operational in the hirer’s fleet next month, with the 150-strong fleet coming on stream from October.

The investment follows Speedy’s overhaul of its company car list, as reported earlier on the blog, with 100 per cent of the models available to personnel now being ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEV). The company says that four in five of its company cars will be ULEVs by the end of the year, based on current orders.
