Hitachi digs deep for schools

Hitachi Construction Machinery UK has donated 21 toy mini diggers to local schools with the aim of getting youngsters excited about the construction industry and to deliver on the manufacturer’s commitment to its local community.

The company signed up to the South Tyneside Pledge last year through which organisations commit to help boost local economic activity, reduce health inequalities, reduce carbon emissions and enhance civic pride.

Chief Executive Officer, David Roberts, said: “We are delighted to donate these Hitachi ‘ride-on’ diggers to primary schools within our community. Not only does it highlight our commitment to the South Tyneside Pledge, but more importantly, it will bring great joy to so many children now and in the future.

“We take great pride in supporting the community that’s so vital to our business, and we hope this donation will inspire the next generation to get involved in the exciting world of construction machinery.”

Cllr Margaret Meling, South Tyneside Council’s lead member for Economic Growth and Transport, said: “Hitachi is one of many global firms that have made a successful home in the borough, and it is fantastic to see them sign up to The Pledge and give back to the communities from which they draw their workforce.”

The first of the toy excavators has been donated to Toner Avenue Primary School in Hebburn. Headteacher, Nicola Fullard, said: “Outdoor play and learning is so important for the development of young people, especially as many youngsters got into the habit of staying indoors during the pandemic, so these mini diggers will really help enhance outdoor play and we thank Hitachi for its kind donation.

“I’m sure all of our pupils will enjoy playing on them in the sandpit, where they’ll be a fixture for years to come.”
