Smiths makes the cut

Smiths Equipment Hire has expanded its range of environmentally friendly equipment with the addition of 30 new Husqvarna K1 PACE battery powered cut-off saws.

The Blackpool-based company believes it is the first hirer to take delivery of the tool in the north west of England.

The K1 PACE accepts a 12in/300mm diameter blade and is designed for use on concrete pipes, concrete garden slabs, cinder blocks and similar materials, and is said to offer the same power and performance as a petrol-powered equivalent.

“With fuel costs rising after the red diesel rebate removal and energy costs rising generally, more users are looking at this sort of equipment,” joint managing director Thomas Smith tells me.

“And of course, we all have to be environmentally aware and protect the planet for our children, and their children. We have to conserve energy and use it wisely.

“The power of the K1 PACE is phenomenal. We demonstrated on part of the yard at our Blackpool Whitegate depot, which was formerly a tram sheds site dating back to the 19th century. The concrete contains a lot of flint and is as hard as iron, but the saw cut it through it like butter.”
