The road to net zero took on a literal significance for Himoinsa Power Solutions on 2 April. The company provided environmentally friendly power generation and lighting equipment with Stage V diesel engines for a motor sport race day at the Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire.

Two Himoinsa 45kVA HYW45 generators and an HBOX+ lighting tower, both powered by Yanmar, were used to provide heating and security illumination for the racing teams staying overnight in the paddock. The equipment also powered tools used by pit crews during the day.

Races included the British Endurance Championship, CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Championship (which Himoinsa sponsored), Legends Cars National Championship and Praga Cup organised by the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC).

Clive Dix, who is managing director of Himoinsa Power Solutions and is himself a motor sport enthusiast – more on that later – tells me: “We’ve seen hybrid energy recovery or cell technology being adopted on F1 cars and tourers but emissions reduction extends to all aspects of an event. It’s the overall carbon footprint that matters, not just individual elements.

“Using Himoinsa’s Stage V equipment reduced emissions by up to 90% compared with traditional diesel machines. So events can be eco-friendly and, because of the overall reduction, classic cars can race without having to alter their original specifications whilst positively offsetting their carbon footprint.

“The road to net zero should not necessarily mean ‘the road to nothing’: there has to be a sensible balance,” says Clive.

“The light coverage from the HBOX+ was very impressive and people commented on how quiet it, and the two generators, were. The machines are powered by the latest Yanmar Stage V engines.”

Clive says that most emissions at an event invariably come from the site equipment rather than the activity itself and he hopes that other organisers recognise the benefits of using Stage V machines, or the LPG and battery options available.

● This was the first event for the 2022 British Endurance Championship series. Clive has competed for the last six years with BARC (NW) CNC Heads, originally in a heavily modified Ford Puma and currently in a significantly adapted Mazda RX7, pictured below, fitted with a sequential gearbox.

Competing at the 2 April event was chiefly to test the car ahead of a full season’s racing. The Mazda gained five places during the race, which was a creditable achievement for a newly customised vehicle on its first outing and starting from the rear of the grid.
