Eco-friendly Miles

Award-winning independent Miles Hire is going green with plans to offer HVO (hydro-treated vegetable oil) as standard on the mini excavators and other compact plant in its fleet.

Director Ryan Miles tells me that the company has conducted trials running machines on the environmentally fuel for 5,000 hours with no issues.

The plan is to fully implement the changeover by April, when the tax rebate on red diesel ends for construction users.

As reported previously on the Site-Eco blog, HVO offers a range of environmental and operational benefits over diesel.

Miles Hire is already offering customers the choice of using HVO supplied in pre-packed 20-litre Fuel Boxes from New Era Fuels.

“We think HVO will appeal particularly to cash customers and members of the public as they look at ways of being more environmentally friendly,” says Ryan.

Miles Hire, which operates depots in Bridgend, Cardiff and Swansea, currently has 52 minis in its fleet with operating weights of up to 3 tonnes.

Ryan also tells me that the company actually experimented with using first generation biofuels in its compact plant ten years ago.
