Really green power

Really green power

Specialist hirer Generator Power, whose fleet comprises machines from Atlas Copco, demonstrated the potential of green technology by using a 45kVA battery unit connected to a generator to power equipment on its stand at the Showman’s Show last month.

Appropriately enough, green is also Generator Power’s corporate colour.

“We used the system to power lighting, laptops, kettles and the like on the stand. After seven hours' of use, the battery still had 93% of its charge,” national sales manager Will Docherty told me.

Generator Power has provided an installation using the battery unit for a national housebuilder that wanted to reduce fossil fuel consumption while powering site compounds.

Typically they would have used 60kVA and 40kVA machines, often running inefficiently due to inconsistent loading.

The hirer supplied a 60kVA generator with a 45kVA battery unit. The former charged the battery quickly and at an optimum rate, and in use it powered an eight-cabin compound that included a drying room, solely on battery power over a 25-hour period on a two-hour charge from the generator.

Over a month, generator runtime was reduced to just over 52 hours in five weeks, using timers and automatic light sensors. It is estimated that this saved the equivalent of 13,900kg of CO2 emissions in 30 days.
