How Hybrids help

An important characteristic of many environmentally friendly products is that they are not simply direct replacements for their fossil-fuelled counterparts: rather, they offer greater operational flexibility and more hire opportunities.

One example is the Generac V20 Eco Hybrid lighting tower which was developed in an exclusive partnership with Speedy. It was amongst the green products displayed at the official opening of the hirer’s Innovation Centre in Milton Keynes recently.

The four-in-one unit can be run directly from the mains, via its internal 25kWh battery, on its Stage V engine using HVO D+ (hydrotreated vegetable oil) or via a separate solar panel (pictured right, above).

Power can also be provided by an external battery pack that runs the machine for up to five days at ten hours per day.

The control is designed for simple operation and can be programmed on a timed basis or set to run automatically via a dusk-to-dawn sensor.

Andy Connor, Speedy’s group supply chain director, tells me that the machine is ideal for sites that already have power available on a site and enables them to use lighting without using fossil fuels.

He adds that Speedy has ordered 200 units for its fleet and many of these have already been delivered from the Milton Keynes facility for work on HS2 projects in the region.

In battery mode the V20 Eco Hybrid’s no-noise characteristics make it ideal for work sites near residential areas. Also, as the engine is used less, it’s life is extended and maintenance is reduced.
