Roads to zero

Adopting eco-friendly equipment can lead to a series of related environmental improvements that create a virtuous circle of greater sustainability.

Oxford Plastics has developed a tough plastic road plate as a green alternative to steel versions. Each section weighs 44kg instead of 500kg and can be installed by two people using lifting handles.

The Low Pro 23/05 was demonstrated at the recent Speedy Innovation Centre opening by Charlotte and Robert Whiteley, respectively Oxford Plastics’ marketing manager and business development director.

The 0.5m sections clip together to cover the required trench length. When installed they can support a 44-tonne vehicle over a 1.2m wide excavation.

The panels themselves have one-sixth the amount of embedded carbon compared with steel equivalents. Sustainability is further enhanced as they can be transported in a 3.5-tonne van rather than a heavy truck, resulting in fewer emissions, and they typically have a longer working life.

The Low Pro panels are designed and manufactured at Oxford Plastics’ headquarters near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire.
