Snorkel on a charge

It’s fascinating when you hear of an eco-friendly product that does not just represent a greener alternative to a fossil fuel-driven machine but which also enhances performance in certain areas.
Snorkel recently launched the electric version of its A46JRT rough-terrain boom lift, the A46JRTE. It has three lithium-ion batteries delivery 17.25kWh and joins eight other similarly powered machines in the manufacturer’s line-up.
Andrew Fishburn, Snorkel’s VP Strategic Accounts EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Asia), tells me that the batteries incorporate a comprehensive battery management system (BMS) which, coupled with the AC electric motor, gives higher torque and increased traction in boggy conditions.
Noise is reduced by 62% and as there is no engine fan, dust generation is less.
The BMS also enables smart charging from a 110V or 240V supply, adjusting automatically to the available amperage.
In addition, Andrew tells me that 25% of Snorkel’s powered access machine sales are now for lithium battery powered variants, where a diesel equivalent is available. So interest in alternative energy sources is certainly growing.
