Delivered in Silence

A range of battery powered motorbikes that can be used for delivery purposes is available from Silence UK.

Formed in April this year, the business distributes machines made at the Silence headquarters in Barcelona which was founded in 2011 by CEO Carlos Sotela. He previously used to compete in the demanding Paris-Dakar off-road event and later turned his attention to developing quiet electric models.

Silence UK’s Gabi Whitfield tells me that the initial focus was on bikes for personal use but that they are also being adopted by businesses needing to make green deliveries in urban areas.

“They are being used on a large scale by the Spanish national postal service, the Madrid police force and a large food home delivery service throughout Spain, and are increasingly popular in other parts of Europe,” she says.

The battery pack slots quickly into position and is designed to give a full day’s operation in typical usage. They incorporate trolley wheels and a handle for ease of use.

Several models are available. The S02 LS (low speed) equates to a 50cc scooter with a range of up to 40 miles from its 2kWh battery, which increases to 91 miles if upgraded to a 5.6kWh power pack. Top speed is 30mph.

The standard S02 is similar to a 125cc machine with a top speed of 56mph and an 80-mile range, while the S01 (principally designed for personal users and commuters) has a maximum speed of 62mph and a range of 80 miles.

The bikes can be fitted with rear storage boxes, in-front carry bags and phone docks, and they can be recharged from a standard 240V supply.
