He’s become a familiar face through the Government’s regular televised Covid-19 briefings, but Sir Patrick Vallance, Britain’s chief scientific adviser, has made some interesting comments about the climate crisis.

They follow on from yesterday’s report by the UN’s intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) which showed the need for urgent action to protect the planet as global warming accelerates.

And some of Sir Patrick’s (below) views echo sentiments expressed in yesterday’s Site-Eco blog post following the report's publication.

Writing in The Times today, he stresses the importance of establishing the ways in which reductions can be made and how they can be measured.

“Every government needs to develop an evidence-based road map setting out the technologies that they require and by when to achieve met zero… monitoring progress against those road maps is going to be crucially important,” he says.

As the blog said yesterday, hirers – and, indeed, all industries and end users – now need guidance on what measures they should implement, how to measure their performance and the common standards required.

This is all the more important given the range of different technologies being developed, such as batteries, solar power, wind and hydrogen fuel.

“Countries should plot mechanisms for scaling up and deploying technologies that already exist, such as wind and solar renewables and electrification of transport,” says Sir Patrick. “It is often said that the UK emits only 1% of global emissions, so we don’t matter — but the UK can make a huge difference by promoting innovation across the globe.”

The government has delayed until autumn plans to set out its decarbonisation strategy. It is also assessing the potential impact on tax revenues if cars and vehicles switch away from using fossil fuels.

So in many ways, we are still only a very short way along the journey to net zero.

And the sooner we have a road map, the better.
