Sustainable benefits

Sustainability is now recognised as a key consideration by investors, shareholders and other business stakeholders. Indeed, embracing green obligations is an integral part of meeting corporate ESG (environment, social and governance) obligations.

The importance that Hilti attaches to this is shown by the fact that the concept is now reflected in the job title of Annette Borén (above) and her Hilti counterparts worldwide. She is Head of Finance and, now, Sustainability for Hilti in Northern Europe and believes that embracing this responsibility offers positive benefits for the tool manufacturer, its employees and its customers.

As reported earlier on the blog, the Hilti Group’s sustainability report sets out strategies to achieve CO2 neutrality in its own value chain by 2023 based on three areas, or ‘pillars’, namely the environment, people and society.

“Finance and sustainability definitely go together,” Annette tells me. “Quite apart from being the right thing to do, lowering your carbon footprint helps the bottom line. Better-maintained tools and equipment will last longer and the Health & Safety of the operator will be improved.

“Construction site managers today have to think in a more strategic way and to look beyond simply repeating the same traditional methods.”

Looking at sustainability in a broad way, Annette says that Hilti has even calculated the carbon footprint of each of its employees, providing a benchmark for future comparisons.

Another new initiative is that employees will be encouraged to devote one day a year to helping a worthy cause and benefiting the wider society.

So rather than just ticking a box, encouraging greater sustainability in proactive ways like these can really help the wider community and our whole environment.
