Hireman opens in Kent

The Hireman has opened an impressive new depot in Rochester. It's the company’s fourth location complementing existing branches in the City, Croydon and Wembley.

The 22,000 sq ft facility is situated on a trading estate and was previously a builders merchant. It has been given a complete refurbishment with offices, meeting areas and training rooms.

Neil Graham, Managing Director, tells me one of the attractions of the site is that there are several other areas adjacent to the building that the business could expand into in the future.

“We identified the area around Rochester as a growth opportunity. Existing customers were winning new business there and wanted us to supply them with the equipment they needed. The site has excellent transport links to the M2, M20 and M25 enabling us to reach Canterbury, Margate, Folkestone and Dover as well as London.

“We knew it could also serve as a strategic location supplying larger equipment over the whole of our area, particularly powered access, which we have been looking at developing for some time. We can cover virtually the whole of London and the south east from Rochester."

The new depot will also offer The Hireman’s full portfolio of tools and smaller equipment to customers throughout Kent and adjacent areas.

“Our Croydon depot has been serving customers in places like Canterbury, Brighton and Hove, so Rochester will be able to take on some of that work and it enables our sales team to target new business in parts of Surrey and south east London.”

At 22,000 sq ft, the Rochester building is similar in size to The Hireman’s City and West locations.

Moving into larger machinery such as powered access was a natural follow-on from equipment like podium steps, aluminium tower and compact scissor lifts.

The Hireman has marked its entry into this market with a £0.5 million order with Snorkel, the biggest single equipment deal in the hirer’s history.

The purchase includes no fewer than 44 machines ranging from 10ft push-arounds to 27ft rough terrain scissors. The latter are powered by lithium-ion batteries, rather than a diesel engine, making them adaptable to different environments.

“We looked at all the major suppliers and went with Snorkel as a trusted brand,” says Neil. “Andrew Fishburn [Snorkel’s Vice President Sales for the UK & EMEA] and Scott Holtby [Sales Director] have done a tremendous job in serving independent hirers like us.

“They’re approachable, understand our business and spend timed developing sound relationships. We like the products, the people and the service. Inevitably we had unexpected delays with the premises but Snorkel were happy to time the delivery of the machines until we were ready. They also did all the branding on them with our livery and stickers at their factory in Washington, Tyne & Wear.”

Reflecting The Hireman’s recent expansion, Head of Procurement Alex Milne says that the business has bought eight 7.2-tonne HGVs in the last year, facilitating the move into larger equipment.

Expect news also of developments at another of the company’s locations later this year…
