Total Safety meets offshore demand

Total Safety Services, a specialist hirer and supplier of safety equipment, reports steady demand for its custom-built H2S breathing air cascade systems.

The apparatus protects operatives from exposure to potentially fatal hydrogen sulphide gas during high-risk work such as plug and abandonment campaigns, exploratory drilling and platform leg decommissioning.

The unit has a multi-point distribution control panel with multiple top specification reducer units. It then uses either low pressure or high-pressure airlines depending on the distance to transport breathing air around the drilling platform or offshore installation. 6-outlet manifolds and Y-Pieces are then used in high-risk areas such as the drill floor and shakers to allow multiple users to connect into the air supply. This allows the client to protect their work force by either pre-empting a gas release during containment breaks or quickly connect to a breathing supply in an emergency.

A high-pressure air compressor is used for refilling the cascade unit and SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) cylinders that can also supply an unlimited amount of air to the drilling platform or offshore installation.

A cascade unit with fifteen 50-litre steel cylinders can provide more than 60 hours of stored breathing air before refilling is required.

Total Safety Services, whose Upstream department is based in Aberdeen, hires and supplies equipment throughout the UK. Other products in the range include gas detection and sampling tubes, breathing apparatus, fall arrest equipment, communications technology and also offers training and calibration services.
