Speedy Aims ‘Hire’ to attract new entrants

Speedy is to run a special online virtual work experience programme to tell young people about career opportunities available in the hire industry and to encourage school leavers to join the business.

Running from 13 to 24 February, Aim ‘Hire’ is for 14 to 18-year-olds. Various modules cover general aspects of the industry, ranging from a view of a working depot and handling equipment, to central functions like finance and marketing. Issues like ESG responsibilities are addressed and there are options to explore particular areas of interest in more depth.

Participants also hear the views of Speedy personnel about working in hire and how their careers have developed within the business.

Other sessions deal with general employability skills for the world of work – which, sadly, seem to be missed off many school agendas. These include time management, teamwork, communication and resilience, as well as tips on job applications and writing a CV.

Quizzes and activities are also included as part of the learning experience.

Aim ‘Hire’ takes typically ten hours to complete, and it includes live webinar sessions with key Speedy personnel, including Chief Executive Dan Evans, who spoke of the hire industry’s need to attract new industry entrants in the recent Q&A interview here on the blog

The programme is being administered by Springpod, an organisation offering virtual work experience and degree tasters to its database of school and college students.

“A lot of young people have absolutely no idea about hire, yet it is a great industry that is fast-paced and exciting with excellent career opportunities,” Gill Roberts, Emerging Talent Lead with Speedy, told me. “We want to open their eyes to what hire can offer them.

“Our industry, like many others, also has to consider increasing workforce diversity in areas like gender, ethnicity and so on.

“We also offer physical work experience placements, but we are obviously limited with participant numbers due to issues like Health & Safety. So doing this virtually with Aim ‘Hire’ will provide something similar. There are 300 places available.”

Speedy has plans to repeat the programme in April when its apprenticeship intake opens.

This sounds like a very worthy initiative which should encourage new entrants into the fascinating world of hire. Click here to find out more about Speedy’s Aim 'Hire' Programme.
