Datatag appointee will tackle plant theft

Plant theft is a perennial problem and it has worsened during the recent economic climate of spiralling equipment prices and supply disruptions.

And since the removal of the red diesel rebate for construction equipment users from last April, fuel theft incidents have also been increasing, as the blog reported last week.

So doubtless Vincent Lane, pictured below, will be kept busy. He has just been appointed by Datatag ID Ltd as its new police liaison and training officer.

He has had a 17-year career as a police constable and is a specialist vehicle examiner with extensive experience with the Datatag product range, which incudes the Cesar plant identification and theft deterrent system (above).

Vincent has also been a dedicated rural response officer with a particular interest in tackling vehicle crime, personally recovering a significant number of stolen vehicles with a value of in excess of £1.2 million.

In his Datatag role he will work with the police forces in the south of England examining vehicles and machinery, including plant, cars, motorcycles and watercraft.

He will also be responsible for the investigation, identification and reinstatement of a recovered asset and assisting police officers with training on the Cesar scheme.

Vincent said: “I have a particular passion for tackling vehicle crime. I created a weekly plant theft and rural crime bulletin which included images of each respective machine. This helped fellow police officers, who might not be familiar with plant machinery, of what to look for in stolen machinery on their travels.

“This generated a good recovery rate of stolen plant. I believe that Datatag is at the forefront of fighting vehicle crime and the Cesar scheme is a great success.”

Kevin Howells, managing director of Datatag, added: “When we needed to increase the capacity of our team we considered over 50 vehicle examiners and ID experts and feel privileged to recruit one of the most experienced, proactive professionals in the industry who is absolutely determined to continue catching criminals and helping police officers gain prosecutions.”
