“Give Peace a Chance”

Today’s blog post has a more reflective, serious quality.

In the part of Cantabria in northern Spain where I'm holidaying this week is the Santo Toribia de Liebana monastery in the village of Camaleno. The atmosphere is quiet, peaceful and contemplative.

It’s a popular pilgrimage destination because it houses what is said to be the largest surviving piece of the True Cross on which Christ was crucified. It’s displayed in a chapel to the north side of the monastery’s church.

Measuring 63cm by 39cm and 3.8cm thick, it is encased in a cross-shaped reliquary made of gilded silver.

Apparently, scientific tests carried out in 1958 verified that the wood fragment is made of a cypress variety native to Palestine dating back more than 2,000 years.

Whatever one’s religious or spiritual beliefs, the Cross has become a recognised symbol of suffering and sacrifice, creating an opportunity for peace, reconciliation, and unity.

At a time when conflict is bringing despair to the people of Ukraine and disruption globally - yesterday the billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros told the Davos economic forum in Switzerland that the invasion may have been the beginning of the third world war and a global depression - we must all hope that a peaceful resolution is found soon.
