Working well at Hilti

A hallmark of the Covid-19 pandemic has been a renewed focus within all industries on workplace health, the well-being of personnel and the ongoing adoption of new practices such as working from home and flexible hybrid arrangements.

Hilti’s focus in this important human resource issue has earned it a major accolade from a global authority on workplace culture.

Hilti GB has been ranked within the top 250 companies as being amongst the UK’s Best Workplaces for Wellbeing (2022) by the Great Place to Work organisation.

Thousands of businesses were analysed in the survey, which asked employees to comment on how the company supports their work-life balance, sense of fulfilment, job satisfaction, psychological safety and financial security.

Evaluations also included an assessment of how well the organisation was able to deliver consistency of their employee experience across all departments and seniority levels.

Measures adopted by Hilti have included refreshing its flexible working policy to better reflect teams needs, partnering with Mates in Mind with construction industry mental health initiative, and conducting a campaign during Mental Health WellBeing week that provided resources and tools to focus on mindfulness and resilience.

In addition, counselling is offered under the company’s employee assistance programme, together with access to financial advice and confidential helplines, and support has been given to managers in maintaining a healthy workplace culture and encouraging regular well-being conversations.

Hilti GB’s new head office in Manchester also incorporates several spaces specifically designed to provide support, including quiet rooms, a well-being suite, a parenting room and a multi-faith prayer room.

Nicola Brazewell, head of HR for Hilti GB, says: “We understand that the working environment is rapidly changing, with many of us now balancing commitments at home and work. We truly believe in a caring culture that allows colleagues to explore their strengths and nurture their potential – it’s ‘where their best belongs’.

“That’s why we champion a genuine work-life balance. We proactively provide a wide range of physical, emotional, social and financial benefits and resources; developed inclusive workplaces with well-being at heart, along with flexible ways of working,” she added.

“We’re delighted to have been recognised for our Wellbeing efforts by Great Places to Work, but keeping our colleagues safe, happy and healthy will continue to be a priority for us."

Benedict Gautrey, managing director of Great Place to Work UK, commented: “When employees feel genuinely cared for, their loyalty, engagement and productivity improve. Happier people also become brand advocates for the business and will often go the extra mile to provide a positive experience for their clients and customers.”
