Eagle gets its claws into utilities

Glasgow-based Eagle Hire tells me that the Survey & Safety operation it established roughly a year ago to complement its tool and plant hire operation is going from strength to strength, especially following a bold investment in specialist equipment for the utilities market.

The company, which has another depot in Edinburgh, runs Survey & Safety from a dedicated branch in the Baillieston area of Glasgow to supply items like total stations, laser levels, cable detection equipment and fall arrest systems.

“We quickly found that we were also getting demand for specialist kit from utilities contractors, such as electro-fusion and butt-fusion equipment, mole boring tools, breathing apparatus and gas detection products,” sales director Iain MacDonald tells me.

“We initially re-hired these items but demand kept growing so we decided to invest in this equipment ourselves. To be honest, at times we’re inundated with enquiries.

“We have spent nearly £1 million on this since last May and we continue to invest to meet demand. We are an independent business and everything we do is self-funded, so this was a big step for us but it has paid off. Eagle must be one of the few independents offering this equipment and we back it up with a strong commitment to service.”

Eagle recruited additional technical personnel to handle the specialist utilities equipment fleet.

“We are benefiting from being able to serve existing utilities customers who used Eagle for their tools and general equipment needs, as well as winning new clients,” says Iain.

“We also offer calibration and servicing of customers’ own safety, survey and utilities equipment which is proving very popular.”

Iain says that Eagle’s tool and plant hire operation is thriving. It is serving customers throughout the whole of Scotland and into the north east of England, and is certainly punching above its weight.

There might also be other developments before long too, I understand, so Eagle’s flight path will be worth following.
