Redpath activity expands

Several tool hire companies have successfully added specialist portable toilet hire to their operations over the past year or so. One of these is Redpath Tool Hire based in the Borders town of Duns and managing director Alan Redpath tells me that the activity is going from strength to strength. 

The company initially bought 100 portable toilets in September 2020. Thirty more were added recently to meet demand and a further 20 will be delivered in April. Construction activity is strong in the local area and Redpath Tool Hire is also supplying toilets across a wider region including Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. 

“We’re not really knocking on doors to get business either,” says Alan. “People are coming to us because they recognise our brand locally and we’re opening new accounts every week.” 

Alan says that one reason for the company’s raised profile is the regular work it puts into maintaining a presence on social media, appealing to existing and potential customers in its area. 

Because of this growth, the business has plans to open another depot in the north east of England. 

“The initial plan would be to have enquiries handled by our head office in Duns, with a driver based at the new site to supply toilets. It could then evolve as our visibility in the area increased and we could then add tools and equipment to the fleet there as necessary. 

“When we launched the toilet hire operation, it attracted local customers who were getting their tools and equipment elsewhere. However, as they got used to our local service they would give us a try for plant and other items, and we then make sure we keep them,” adds Alan.

The toilets that Redpath Tool Hire offers are Fleet models made by PolyJohn. “Customers like them because the flush and sink are operated by separate foot pedals. This eliminates hand contact which is an important consideration with respect to Covid-19.”
