Paws for thought

One of the most striking products that I’ve seen in a long time is a dog-like robot called Spot. Made by the American firm Boston Dynamics.
It was demonstrated by Leica Geosystems at the recent opening of Speedy’s Innovation Centre in Milton Keynes.
The machine is controlled by a tablet-like device and can be fitted with a Leica BLK ARC autonomous laser scanning module for capturing data as it travels.
It is particularly suited to applications in remote locations or at potentially hazardous sites like nuclear facilities or deep underground mines.
Power comes from a rechargeable battery and, instead of a kennel, Spot can be self-charged via a dedicated docking station.
Not surprisingly, Spot carries a hefty price tag, but it is a high-tech example of the innovative solutions available for particularly challenging site survey tasks.
