Tackle workplace stress

Stress, depression and anxiety are the second biggest cause of work-related ill health in the construction industry.

Recognising that starting a conversation with people is an important but sometimes difficult first step in preventing stress, The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published a Work-related Stress Talking Toolkit as part of a wider approach to managing mental health on construction sites.

The publication is primarily aimed at small and medium sized businesses with a regular workforce. However, it is designed for use across the whole industry and, as hirers are important parts of the supply chain, this is a helpful resource they mignt others aware of.

HSE defines stress as ‘the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them’. It points out that what stresses one person may not affect another.

Employers should ensure that supervisors or site managers are appropriately supported when tackling this issue.

The Toolkit suggests key elements of a conversation on the topic. These include timing, such as holding 10 or 15-miute talks with people once a week, and choosing a theme.

Discussions mighht focus on job demands, methods of control, support, relationships and behaviour towards others, roles and responsibilities, and managing change.

A convenient setting is required, such as a tea break, and a spirit of open and honest discussion is required with everyone listening to what is being said. Questions should be encouraged, with actions and solutions being agreed together.

The Toolkit is a worthwhile initiative and it can be downloaded here
